3 Fun Family Easter Ideas (Hint: they’re all chocolate-free, yippeee!)

With Easter just a hop, skip, and a jump away, it’s time to plan some fun family traditions! Yearly traditions are what childhood memories are made of, aren’t they? As much as I love Easter and all the festivities, sometimes the excess of sugar and craziness that comes along with it can be overwhelming for both kids and adults alike. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not an Easter chocolate scrooge but I do think it’s fun to include traditions for our kids that don’t only revolve around sweets. So here’s three fun family Easter traditions that don’t include a sugar high (and crash) perfect for your cute little bunnies!

1. Dyeing Eggs

As a little girl, I grew up dyeing hard boiled eggs and it was the highlight of Easter for me! In America, where I’m from originally, it’s a pretty common tradition but seems to less so here in Australia. To make it extra fun, once the eggs were dry, my dad hid them all around the backyard for an egg hunt!
It’s so simple and fun, and allows kids to be creative. It’s well worth the little bit of set up there is. Here’s a simple guide to dyeing eggs!

1. Boil eggs for 12 minutes and allow to cool.
2. Set up cups (one for each colour) half full of hot water with 1 tsp vinegar and add in 20 drops food colouring.
3. Carefully lower eggs into dye solution and leave for a few minutes. Take out and let the eggs dry in egg cartons or plate.

There’s a more detailed guide here.

2. Easter PJs

Another chocolate free alternative Easter treat are Easter pjs! And unlike Christmas ones that only really last the Christmas season, cute little bunnies can be worn all year around! Matchy matchy or not, there’s lots of options! Here’s some links to few very cute pjs!

 - Cotton On

 - Target

 - Gather And Moss

3. Easter baskets

There’s nothing like the thrill of running through the house trying to find where your mum has hidden a basket full of special little gifts just for you! It’s one of my most cherished childhood memories and now I’m the one hiding the baskets for my own children.

Basically the idea is, fill a small basket with little goodies for your kids (one basket for each child) and hide them in your house. If you’re feeling extra, you can make little clues like a scavenger hunt which we all know kids LOVE! (If you’re looking for a scavenger hunt, check out ... ) If not, then just let them go for it, which they will love just as much. The great thing is that these can be completely sweet-free or have a few sneaky treats hidden inside, your choice.

Here’s a few ideas of what to put in Easter baskets:
• Textas or crayons
• Play dough
• Stamps
• Stickers
• Musical instruments
• Stuffed bunny
• Plate and bowl set (check out Bobo&Boo's gorgeous, eco-friendly collection here)
• Bubbles
The Brushies mini set (our personal fave, only slightly biased!)

So there you have it, 3 family traditions that will make Easter just that little bit more magical! And I repeat, no sugar consumption involved 😜 Happy Easter, everyone!
